Micromax’s first 4G LTE phone, Canvas Knight 2 launched
Micromax, the popular Indian phone maker, announced their first ever 4G LTE supporting Android phone, the Canvas Knight 2, in the home country yesterday. It will be available from June 10 for Rs.16299 ($259 approx.) across the country. Going by the specs sheet, Canvas Knight 2 is a mid-range droid with some interesting add-on features –
CPU – 64-bit, 1.5GHz octacore processor, Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset
Memory – 2GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, upto 32GB microSD card support
Camera – 13MP, auto-focus main camera with dual-LED flash (Sony IMX 214 CMOS sensor, 5-elements lens module), 5MP front camera (Omnivision wide-angle sensor, 4-elements lens module) for great selfies
Display – 5 inches, 720 x 1280 pixels resolution AMOLED touch screen
OS – Android 5.0 Lollipop OS
Others – dual SIM (both 4G LTE capable), non-removable 2230mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, FM Radio
Price – Rs.16299 (US $259)
Micromax is popular in India for making affordable low/mid-range Android phones. The first generation Canvas Knight was a premium, flagship device of MMX and Knight 2 seems to continue with that legacy. Besides decent specs sheet, Canvas Knight 2 packs following extra features
Premium design – Canvas Knight 2 has glass panels both at front display and back plus a metal rim surrounds the sides giving it an overall premium “glass-metal” finish. Gorilla Glass 3 protective coating is provided at both front and back panels.
AMOLED Display – MMX has used an AMOLED panel in Canvas Knight 2 instead of an LCD. AMOLED display is known for bright vivid colors, wide viewing angles and better sunlight legibility.
Separate sound chipset – MMX has incorporated a Cirrus Logic Wolfson Stereo mobile chipset into Canvas Knight 2 for better sound output
Cons – a meager 5 inches, HD screen (not even full HD) which is not expected from a current flagship. Price is a bit on the higher side considering the availability of way too many better options in this price range (like Samsung Galaxy S4 for Rs.16K, Xiaomi Mi4i for Rs.13K, Lenovo A6000 Plus for Rs.8K, Huawei Honor 6 for 17K etc). Micromax should consider a price-cut soon (it will be a great buy at Rs.10K) if they want Canvas Knight 2 to succeed in the fiercely competitive Indian market.
